Action films, and/or adventure films (though one rarely has adventure without
action) might be considered a sub-genre of drama. As one would expect,
movies in this category have a great deal of action throughout the film.
One thinks immediately of such films as Raiders of the Lost Ark, but
James Bond films are also action films, in this case falling into the more
specific sub-classification of espionage.
There's something cathartic about action films. Problems are solved with the throw of a punch, or the shot of a gun. One need not worry about over-intellectualization, or psychological complexity, as a general rule. As one would expect, then, there is usually a good deal of violence in such films, but violence is a part of the human experience, and often a dramatic part.
We've listed below the categories that we feel are most appropriate for this type of film.
Classic Action Films
Comic (or Semi-Comic) Action Films
Disaster Films
Espionage
Futuristic Action Films
Military & War
Sea Adventure
Superheroes
